Ballett Chemnitz

Portrait

Under the direction of ballet director Sabrina Sadowska, the international ballet ensemble of the Theater Chemnitz devotes itself to the "classics" of the ballet repertoire in a predominantly modern language of movement on the one hand, and on the other hand bears witness to its own creative energy through premieres. In the 2014/2015 season, the first Chemnitz Festival for Contemporary Dance "TANZ|MODERNE|TANZ" took place with great success. Various companies from partner cities on four continents were presented and the connection between modernity and the revolutionisation of dance in the experimental space of our time was explored. The festival was successfully repeated in the following years.
As part of the promotion of young talent, students from various dance academies are regularly given the opportunity to complete an internship at Ballett Chemnitz. The opera ballet school is also open to children, young people and adults, who are actively involved in the current productions. In addition, connections are forged with young audiences through mentoring classes at schools, workshops and school dance projects, and an understanding of dance as an art form in its own right is promoted. Formats such as "Ballet au lait" are also platforms where dance-makers talk about exciting topics related to dance and ballet and introduce interested guests to the world of ballet. The Ballett Chemnitz is also involved in activities beyond dance itself in the "BallettBenefizGala", to which guests from various companies and universities from all over Germany are invited. Every year, all participants perform for free, with the proceeds going to support a social or charitable institution in Chemnitz.

History and biography

On the history of the ensemble
At the time of the opening of the opera house around 1909, the Ballett Chemnitz had only a few members and appeared mainly in interludes of stage works. In the 1920s, more attention was paid to it and renowned solo dancers were engaged. It developed into an independent section that made a name for itself with important first performances. Guest performances by Mary Wigman and Gret Palucca also attracted the attention of the scene to Chemnitz. After the ensemble was withdrawn to armaments production during the Second World War, Wigman student Thea Maaß and Jean Weidt subsequently rebuilt the ballet and led it to national renown.

Sabrina Sadowska received her training in Basel. This was followed by engagements as a dancer in Trier, Bremerhaven and Halle as well as scholarships at the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen. She has worked as a ballet teacher and master at ballet schools and theatres in Warsaw, Leipzig, Dresden, Poznan, Brno and Essen. With Ralf Dörnen she was ballet master and deputy ballet director at Ballett Vorpommern. In 2013/2014 she moved to Chemnitz as ballet company director and 1st ballet master, devotes herself to various productions as a choreographer and is the founder of the festival TANZ | MODERNE | TANZ. In 2016 she received the Verdienstmedaille des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. In 2017/2018 she took over the direction of the Ballett Chemnitz.

„Fremd bin ich eingezogen, fremd zieh‘ ich wieder aus“, heißt es in Franz Schuberts „Winterreise“. Aufbrechen, Losgehen, Wegziehen, Flüchten, Ankommen – das sind die Schlagworte unserer Zeit und unserer Arbeit. Fordern und fördern gehört ebenso dazu und grägt die tägliche Arbeit im Theater sowie in der kulturellen Bildung und in der Stadt. Tanz ist politisch! Tanz geht uns alle an!
