Ballett Rossa

Portrait

The BALLETT ROSSA of OPER HALLE, since March 2011 named after its former director and choreographer Ralf Rossa, is currently comprised of 19 versatile ballet dancers from 11 countries. With two ballet evenings per season, including at least one great narrative ballet, the BALLETT ROSSA sets both a regional and national tone. Ralf Rossa developed numerous premiers for his company, including "Endstation Sehnsucht" (2006), "Nijinsky" (2010), "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (2002), "Schlafes Bruder" (2004), "Amadeus" (2006), "Peter Pan" (2008), "Die Schöne und das Biest" (2010), "Die Schneekönigin" (2011), "Das Phantom der Oper" (2012), "Messias" (2015) and "Casanova" (2015) with instrumental music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. With his self-arranged music selection Ralf Rossa frequently opens doors for new creative grounds. His choreographies were also performed in Schwerin, Cottbus, Metz and Ankara.

Since April 2019 Michal Sedláček has provisionally undertaken the artistic and organisational direction for Ballett Rossa. Previously he has worked as first soloist since 2001, choreographic assistant since 2005 und since 2012 assistant ballet director in Halle. His choreography for ALICE IM WUNDERLAND (UA) premiered in November 2019. A great success for Ballett Rossa was also the production HIERONYMUY B., a dance evening by Nanine Linning and the Staatskapelle Halle, as well as EVOUTION, a premiere choreographed by Václav Kuneš.

History and biography

On the ensemble´s history

Ballet and dance have a long tradition in Halle, stretching back to the opening of the city theatre in 1886. In the 1950s, choreographer Henn Haas, a pupil of Laban, Kreuzberg and Mary Wigman, started introducing new material and forms of expression to the stage in Halle in many world premieres, which gained the ensemble a reputation well beyond the city limits as a paragon of high-quality dance. Ralf Rossa has held the position of ballet director and chief choreographer at Oper Halle since 1998. The ballet ensemble, which was renamed after its director in March 2001, is based at Oper Halle. In 2009, Oper Halle became part of the Theater, Oper und Orchester GmbH Halle (Bühnen Halle) private limited company, which is home to five different branches of the performing arts. Ralf Rossa consistently invites audiences to discover new creative territory through his imaginative handling of literary sources.

Ralf Rossa

Ralf Rossa has been ballet director and chief choreographer at Oper Halle since 1998. He created his first ballets in Dortmund (Germany) as assistant to Youri Vámos. In 1994 he became ballet director in Dortmund. During his time in Halle he has developed over 35 ballets for his company, including several world premieres such as “Schlafes Bruder”, “Endstation Sehnsucht”, “Amadeus” and “Die Schneekönigin”. He has staged his own productions of the operetta “Im weißen Rössl”, the Mel Brooks musical “Young Frankenstein – Frankenstein Junior” and Bernstein’s “West Side Story” at Oper Halle. A ballet gala he created showcases a selection of his best-loved creations from his first 13 years in Halle. Guest choreographies have taken him to Austria, Norway and France. In 2009 he staged and choreographed Gluck’s “Orphée et Eurydice” in Nice (France).

“My wish is to create contemporary narrative ballets that drive the development of ballet and reach a wide audience. In these difficult times, with the arts politically and financially under threat, dance is an especially vital contribution to society.”
