The ballet company of the Nuremberg State Theater is now in its fifthteenth season under the direction of its ballet director and chief choreographer Goyo Montero. In the meantime, the company is known far beyond the borders of Franconia and belongs to the first league in the international ballet scene. Alongside Goyo Montero, world-class choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, Nacho Duato, Johan Inger, Mauro Bigonzetti, Crystal Pite, Douglas Lee, Cayetano Soto, Ohad Naharin, William Forsythe, Christian Spuck, Alexander Ekman, Hofesh Shechter and Marco Goecke continue to work with the company on breathtaking choreographies and dance pieces. Testimony to this are the many sold-out performances at the Nuremberg State Theater and the growing number of invitations to national and international dance festivals. Successful guest performance tours have taken the company to Moscow, Biarritz and Lausanne, among other places.
When establishing the company, Goyo Montero pursued the goal of creating a soloist ensemble. Although all company members bring different personalities to the table and each has his or her own background, Montero's dancers work with dedication as a team. They all have excellent basic classical training while also being highly experienced in contemporary dance techniques. Since most of Goyo Montero's work is based on the development of a story, his dancers have in common an interest and talent in the performance of a role. To date eight dancers of the company have received the Bavarian Arts Promotion Award in recognition of their achievements, and two ensemble members have been nominated for the FAUST Theater Award. In 2009 the Nuremberg Ballet and Goyo Montero have been awarded with the cultural prize of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Middle Franconia. In 2018, the Staatstheater Nürnberg Ballett under the direction of Goyo Montero received the German Dance Award Aktuell for "outstanding development in dance."
