Tanzcompagnie Volkstheater Rostock is the smallest division of Rostock theater with eight dancers, currently from five nations. Each season, the ensemble develops two dance productions with the choreographer Katja Taranu as well as with various guest choreographers and is also involved in interdisciplinary productions. Due to a lot of innovation, openness and great initiative, the dancers are able to meet the wide range of artistic requirements. In the mainly modern and contemporary oriented works, not only the technical skills but also great performing skills of the dancers are required. The topics of their productions are always up to date. It is important for the ensemble to be close to the audience, to feel in dance what moves the people and the world. The range of repertory ranges from world premieres of contemporary material to productions for children and experimental presentations. The members of Tanzcompagnie traditionally arrange workshops and projects that contribute a lot to dance education for children and young people. They increase their regional presence by participating in major cultural projects in the Hanseatic City of Rostock. The dance company knows about its fan community, but is aware that acceptance from the audience has to be gathered again and again with versatile works.

On the company’s history
Volkstheater Rostock is the municipal theater of the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock. Ballet and dance have been part traditionally since it was founded in 1895.
In 2009, the Volkstheater made a consistent change from classical ballet to modern dance theater with a contemporary style of movement and its own aesthetics. The dance company was founded as Bronislav Roznos Dance Theater in 2009 with ten dancers and Roznos as main choreographer. Difficult cultural- political times caused Roznos to leave the Hanseatic city. Since 2013 Katja Taranu has been the artistic director of the dance devision. Through the conceptual improvement of the ensemble, she also delivers new impulses of the contemporary dance scene to the audience and points out the diversity of this genre.
Katja Taranu
Katja Taranu studied dance in Leipzig, her first employment lead her to Zwickau. During her 15 years of work there she moved up from soloist dancer to artistic assistant of Bronislav Rosznos. In her times as assistant she also involved herself with great choreographic input for many music- and dramaproductions. Taranu opened her first season in Rostock in 2013 with the premiere of Lorca's tragedy "Bernarda Alba's house”, accompanied by the North German Philharmonic Orchestra. Since that time, full-length world premieres and smaller works have been part of her work. Interdisciplinary collaborations are just as important to Katja Taranu as pure dance productions to make dance more visible. In 2016 Handel's "Messiah" premiered under her direction.
