Saarländisches Staatsballett

Portrait

Stijn Celis has been directing the Saarländisches Staatsballet since this season. The company’s repertoire is characterised by his own choreographies (evening-length narrative ballets, short abstract works) and pieces by important contemporary choreographers such as Johan Inger or Alexander Ekman. In addition, there is an evening at the end of the season for which the ensemble members will create their own pieces.

History and biography

On the ensemble’s history

Since the opening of the new theatre building in Saarbrücken on 9 October 1938, the house – first a city theatre, then from 1971 onwards as the Saarländisches Staatstheater – has had a ballet ensemble. This was directed by Hans Preus (1938-41), Gerda Laschinski (1941-44), again Hans Preus (1949-64), Herbert Juzek (1964-68), Hrvoje Ježić (1968-70), Jutta Giesecke and Klaus Zimmern (1970-72), Roberto Trinchero (1972-76), Rainer Köchermann (1976-81), Thomas Fletcher (1981-83), Pierre Dobrievich (1983-87), Philip Lansdale (1987-1991), Birgit Scherzer (1991-1999), Bernd Roger Bienert (1999-2001) and Marguerite Donlon (2001-13). Stijn Celis has been the company’s director since the beginning of season 2014/15.

Stijn Celis

Born in Turnhout in northern Belgium, Stijn Celis became a member of the Royal Ballet of Flanders in 1983 (Belgium). Between 1986 and 1996 he danced in Zurich, Bern and Geneva (Switzerland) and also performed at the Cullberg Ballet in 1996/97. He ended his dance career at the age of 33 and studied set design in Antwerp (Belgium). Afterwards, he worked as a freelance choreographer and stage designer. From 2004 to 2007, he was ballet director in Bern and then once again worked as a freelancer. He became the ballet director in Saarbrücken for the 2014/15 season. Since 1993, he has created approximately 50 choreographic works for the Cullberg-Ballett, the Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Nederlands Dans Theater, Göteborger Oper dance company and the Semperoper Ballett.

“My objective is to allow the audience to experience exciting, unforgettable and moving moments – and to convey the great diversity and wealth of expression in dance today.”
