Ballett X Schwerin

Portrait

Starting with the 2021/22 season, Xenia Wiest is the new artistic director and chief choreographer at the Mecklenburg State Theatre Schwerin. With at least one new creation per season, she shapes the artistic profile of the international 14-member company. As a choreographer, the former ballerina finds her inspiration in the musical material and the individual body dynamics of her dancers. The X in the company's name symbolises an openness in all directions and the will to innovate. This applies not only to the artistic side, but also to the open management style involving the creation of a healthy and positive working environment. The integration and implementation of a holistic health programme and the realisation of a comprehensive scientific sport and medical approach is a novelty in the dance world. The dance language is based on a strong classical technique that integrates neo-classical and contemporary influences and does not limit itself aesthetically. Ultimately, the X symbolises a "for": an accessibility of the programme as well as a closeness of the choreographer Xenia to the audience.

History and biography

On the ensemble´s history

The first documented reference to a dance ensemble at the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin was in 1755: on the occasion of Duchess Amalia von Mecklenburg-Schwerin’s birthday, a ballet with pantomimes was performed under the directorship of the ballet master Girard who was employed by the court. The ballet ensemble, which was almost completely dismantled and temporarily replaced by choir members in the 19th century, was reborn with a new ensemble and permanently contracted dancers at the beginning of the 20th century; it then integrated contemporary developments and German expressionist dance (Ausdruckstanz) into a classical repertoire. After the end of the Second World War, work on dance began again immediately. The ballet ensemble has been a successful, nationally acclaimed department of the Mecklenburgische Staatstheater Schwerin since 1945.
