Tanztheater am Staatstheater Braunschweig

Portrait

The dance ensemble at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, led by Gregor Zöllig, is dedicated to contemporary dance. The interplay of interdisciplinary artist‘s collectives, international guests and works by chief choreographer Gregor Zöllig form the starting point and basis of the diverse programme. Gregor Zöllig is constantly developing his artistic dance language in collaboration with the ensemble, which is, which is characterized by strong personalities, and interdisciplinary cooperation partners. His dance theatre is a laboratory for social fantasies, in which he searches for his own expression to transform socio-critical forms and narratives into movement. In addition to influential figures in German dance history such as Reinhild Hoffmann, Henrietta Horn, Anna Konjetzky and Rainer Behr, present Guilherme Botelho, Guy Nader and Maria Campos, as well as James Wilton the diversity of different dance languages to the audience. A sustainable educational programme and the development of a dance repertoire for children and young people introduces a young audience to dance as an artistic form.

History and biography

Gregor Zöllig, born in Switzerland, started his professional dance training at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and studied at the Ballet Academy of the John Cranko School in Stuttgart. From 1989 to 1995 he worked as a dancer and solo dancer in Aachen and Münster. In 1995, Gregor Zöllig founded and ran his own company. From 1997 - 2005 he was director of the Tanztheater Osnabrück along with Christine Biedermann. From 2005 - 2015 he was director of the Tanztheater Bielefeld. Guest choreographies have taken him to the Tanzwerk Nürnberg, the Staatstheater Schwerin, the Ballett Vorpommern, the Ballett Nürnberg and the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater. He also founded several much-noticed educational projects, such as »Zeitsprung« und »tanzwärts«. Gregor Zöllig is a member of various juries, including the Board of Trustees of  the Kunststiftung NRW. Since the 2015/2016 season he has been artistic director and chief choreographer of the Tanztheater at Staatstheater Braunschweig.

„Dance begins at the point when words fail, when speechlessness manifests itself in the body and the internal urge to move tells the story of one’s existence.”
