Portrait

Ballett Trier creates four new productions each season and also has some productions from previous seasons in its repertoire. For ballet director Roberto Scafati, it is always about content that touches. It is not about the obvious, but about giving the audience space and going into depth. The ballet director's own experiences flow into the choreographic work. The emphasis is on contemporary dance with its own forms of movement, rather than formal guidelines. Thus, there are no restrictions, which is especially important since the ensemble is continually influenced in its work by the environment and events of our time. The dramaturgy serves as the foundation. A libretto is always worked out for the original performances. The dancers of the ensemble are regularly given the opportunity to create their own choreographies and present them on stage. Young choreographers join the company every year and develop their own new creations. Ballett Trier is not only at home on the stage of the Trier Theater, but is also a regular guest on national and international stages. In addition, a new position in dance pedagogy will be created in spring 2023. The ballet company attaches great importance to the development of young talent and offers for children and young people. For example, dancers are also involved in family concerts or tour daycare centers and schools with a mobile dance theater production.

History and biography

Roberto Scafati
Ballet Director

Roberto Scafati, born in Rome (Italy), completed his dance training at the Scuola Italiana di Danza in Rome and with Rosella Hightower in Cannes. He was then engaged at the Teatro San Carlo in Napoli and later moved to the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome. From 1994 to 2003 he was principal dancer at the Ulm Ballet, where he later began his career as a choreographer. From 2004 to 2008, he was first training director and choreographic assistant and then ballet director of the Ulmer Theater from 2009 to 2018.
With the 2018/19 season, he joined Theater Trier as the new ballet director. His choreographies have been shown on various international stages such as the Brest Theatre (France), Theaterhaus Ankara (Turkey) and Curitiba Balé de Guaira (Brazil), Jerusalem Dance Theatre (Israel), Introdans (NL) and several stages in Germany such as Gauthier Dance in Stuttgart. He is also a frequent jury member at international dance festivals and competitions, such as the International Solo Dance Theater Festival Stuttgart.

"I believe in individuality. Every person is unique! However, the Buddhist Itai Doshin speaks of 'different individualities having a common goal', which to me means being a team and creating something together. This thought guides me in my work as a ballet director."
