Ballett Eisenach

Portrait

The Landestheater Eisenach Ballet is comprised of 17 dancers and performs many functions. The most important criterion an openness to every form of development. The aim of reaching the highest possible standard is striven for in its ongoing work. The qualities of a performance play an important role in the ensemble’s work. Regular “Young Choreographer” evenings enable members to develop themselves in this field too. In addition to this, the Ballett Eisenach takes part in operettas and musicals at the Meininger State Theater. There are also ballet evenings of a high standard in the modern, unique style of ballet director Andris Plucis, who has been leading the company since 2009.

History and biography

On the enesemble's history

The Ballett Eisenach has always had strong connections to the city, which has been marked by a lively exchange, both in the GDR era and after the fall of the Wall. Contemporary developments also enjoy great popularity. With its eight female and eight male dancers, the ballet of the Landestheater Eisenach is one of the largest ballet ensembles in Germany. Ballet director Andris Plucis was appointed in 2009/10 and has since led the Ballett Eisenach to new heights. His first piece as new director, “Romeo and Juliet”, was an immediate success with the audience and was also performed the following season. Further highlights of the 2013/14 season included the world premiere of the ballet “E.T.A. Hoffmann” with specially composed music by Rudolf Hild and the occasion when Plucis combined Sibelius’ symphonic poem “En Saga” with Stravinsky’s expressionist piece “The Firebird” for a ballet double bill.

Andris Plucis

In 2009/10, Andris Plucis, former ballet director and principal choreographer at the Theater Ulm, became artistic director of the Eisennacher Ballett. Plucis, born in Zurich (Switzerland) as the son of a famous Latvian ballet couple, caused a stir in 1985 when he took over the ballet company of the Stadttheater Gießen as Germany’s youngest ballet director. Before doing so, he danced for many years with the Oper Bonn and at the Städtischen Bühnen Frankfurt under Egon Madsen and William Forsythe.

“Our aim at the Ballet Eisenach is to present another facet of dance at every new ballet evening, without committing ourselves to a single style. By performing in a large number of shows, we attempt to fully realise every single dancer’s development potential.”
