Theater Bremen / Unusual Symptoms

Portrait

Unusual Symptoms have been company-in-residence at Theater Bremen since 2012. Originally founded by the French-Algerian choreographer Samir Akika, the company and dance division of Theater Bremen have been co-directed by Alexandra Morales and Gregor Runge since 2018. Since then, Unusual Symptoms has increasingly worked with internationally renowned choreographers such as Faye Driscoll, Máté Mészáros, Núria Guiu Sagarra and Adrienn Hód/HODWORKS, co-produced and toured internationally at the interface between independent scene and municipal theatre, and developed projects with young performers, exchange formats and festivals. The invited choreographers often create productions in Bremen for the first time in Germany and for a permanent ensemble. In 2020, Unusual Symptoms and Theater Bremen were invited to the Tanzplattform Deutschland with two productions.

History and biography

On the ensemble´s history
Theater Bremen is one of the most important venues n German dance history. As a place where such innovative and controversial choreographers as Johann Kresnik, Gerhard Bohner, Reinhild Hoffmann and Susanne Linke have worked, the dance departmanet of Theater Bremen has repeatedly broken with tried and tested forms and certainties, always trying to develop social impact from its art. Coming from this tradition, the company Unusual Symptoms is currently working as a representative of the new generation on an experimental and aesthetically complex ensemble model for contemporary dance.

Alexandra Morales & Gregor Runge
Since 2018/2019, Alexandra Morales and Gregor Runge have been in charge of the dance department of Theater Bremen and the company Unusual Symptoms. International co-productions and work with changing guest choreographers and in interdisciplinary constellations characterise their new orientation, with which they have repositioned Theater Bremen's dance department in the field of contemporary dance.
