The BALLETT DORTMUND is an independent division of the THEATER DORTMUND. In its programming it combines the tradition of European dance art with the artistic signatures of contemporary choreographers. Over the past decade and a half, it has contributed to the international revitalisation of the genre with its own productions of story ballets based on world literature not previously accessible to dance. Close collaboration with Mauro Bigonzetti, Demis Volpi, Christian Spuck, Douglas Lee, Jacopo Godani, Alexander Ekman, Edward Clug and others. Affiliated with the main company is the NRW JUNIORBALLETT, founded in 2014 by Xin Peng Wang as a two-year training programme for highly talented young dancers, which has since advanced to become Dortmund's "dance ambassador" through its Europe-wide guest performances.
On the history of the ensemble
The Ballett Dortmund currently comprises 26 dancers from 14 nations. Since 2014, it has also been affiliated with the twelve-dancer NRW Junior Ballet, a project that offers young dancers the opportunity to gain professional and stage experience for two years, to participate in productions and to develop and realise independent dance projects. Under the direction of Xin Peng Wang, Ballett Dortmund has established itself as an innovative force in the dance scene of North Rhine-Westphalia. Wang, himself an artistic representative of a movement language based on neoclassicism, focuses on the discovery of new (literary) material and composers for full-length story ballets. The repertoire also includes creations and existing works by renowned choreographers such as William Forsythe, Hans van Manen, Mauro Bigonzetti, Christian Spuck, Benjamin Millepied, Alexander Ekman, Cayetano Soto, Edwaard Liang, Douglas Lee, Demis Volpi, Edward Clug, Wayne McGregor, Akram Khan and George Balanchine. With its youth and senior dance theatre, Ballett Dortmund focuses on active cultural development work. At the Ballettzentrum Westfalen, Ballett Dortmund organises an annual summer academy with internationally renowned teachers and students from all over the world.
Xin Peng Wang, born in Dalian (China), trained in Beijing, member of the Chinese National Ballet. Emigrated to Europe in 1989. 2001 - 2003 Ballet Director at the State Theatre in Meiningen, since 2003 artistic director and since 2020 general director of BALLETT DORTMUND. Artistic collaborations include The Hong Kong Ballet, National Ballet of China Beijing, Contemporary Dance Festival in New York, Ballet of the Semperoper Dresden, Het Nationale Ballet Amsterdam and Royal Ballet van Vlaanderen Antwerpen. In 2000 he created the ballet "Die rote Laterne ("The Red Lantern") with director Yimou Zhang, which was shown more than 250 times worldwide. Xin Peng Wang contributed to the revitalisation of the genre with his highly acclaimed story ballets.
