TANZ_KASSEL, the newly founded contemporary dance company at the Staatstheater Kassel in the 2021/22 season, works under its new dance director Thorsten Teubl with a curatorial model that is fully committed to the diversity and variety of contemporary dance. International guest choreographers work exclusively on new creations for and with TANZ_KASSEL. This allows the dancers to dance an unusually broad repertoire as co-creators and gives them the opportunity – as well as the audience in Kassel – to get to know a maximum range of choreographic styles.
The programmatic concept and philosophy of TANZ_KASSEL can be summarized under the term ‘Kassel Dramaturgy‘: to show the maximum range of contemporary styles and aesthetics in Kassel and to develop pieces together with the choreographers that take up, reflect and question socio-political phenomena and themes at the pulse of time. In order for this to succeed, transparent communication with all participants is essential for us in our collaboration. Only in a respectful, mutually appreciative relationship at eye level can dance and art succeed.
With its own full-time position for dance mediation, TANZ_KASSEL focuses on education and mediation projects, not only for schools, but far beyond for the most diverse population groups in the city.
On the ensemble’s history
TANZ_KASSEL is the newly founded contemporary dance company at the Staatstheater Kassel in the 2021/22 season. The ensemble consists of 12 permanent dancers, reinforced by up to 8 interns per season.
Thorsten Teubl studied musicology and theater sciences as well as musical theater directing and cultural management. He completed various advanced training courses, including Curating in the scenic arts in Salzburg and Munich. After his engagement as dance dramaturg, company manager, later as deputy director of dance theater, at the Staatstheater Kassel from 2008 to 2018, he worked at the Landestheater Linz from 2018 to 2020 as manager and dramaturg for TANZLIN.Z and toured worldwide with the company there. In the 2020/21 season, he was deputy ballet director and ballet dramaturg at Theater Chemnitz and has been Artistic Director of TANZ_KASSEL at Staatstheater Kassel since the 2021/22 season.
