The ensemble is highly international, with 32 members from a range of 17 different cultures and generations, including dancers from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Greece, the UK, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Peru, Russia, Spain, South Korea, the USA, Taiwan, and Germany.
By the time of her death, in 2009, Pina Bausch had created a total of 46 works; the majority of them are in the Tanztheater Wuppertal’s repertoire. With its innumerable guest performances on various continents this ensemble is regarded as an important cultural ambassador for the dance world of North Rhine-Westphalia and beyond.

History of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch
Pina Bausch wrote dance history. She not only founded the world-famous company in Wuppertal, she shaped a whole genre – dance theatre – and influenced countless other artists, choreographers and directors worldwide who credit her and her work. For this she received a great many prizes, such as the German Dance Prize, Venice’s Golden Lion and the Kyoto Prize. When she first arrived in Wuppertal in 1973, no-one guessed she would reinvent modern dance there. The young dancer and choreographer (1940-2009) took over the ballet company at the Wuppertaler Bühnen (the combined municipal theatres) and soon renamed it the Tanztheater Wuppertal (‘Wuppertal dance theatre’), because that was her goal: to unite dance and theatre.

Boris Charmatz is a dancer, choreographer and creator of experimental projects such as the ephemeral school Bocal, the Musée de la danse and [terrain], an institution without roof and walls. He subjects dance to formal constraints which redraw the field of its possibilities. For him, the stage is a notepad on which to draft concentrated, organic concepts in order to observe the chemical reactions, intensities and tensions engendered by their encounters.
In September 2022, Boris Charmatz becomes the new director of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and launches, together with [terrain], a new project between France and Germany.
